No Official Visit at West Gate would be complete with our very own R.W. Bro. Morrison putting the DDGM into the hot seat while he was roasted by this truly unique West Gate experience. The festivities carried on into the later part of the evening with all feeling invigorated and energized as this Masonic year draws to a close on a high note. Congratulations to Bro.Cesar, West Gate's and the Districts newest FC.
On Wednesday March 29, 2017 West Gate 734 entertained the DDGM for Toronto West, R.W. Bro. Dave on the occasion of his Official Visit. The WM, officers and members conferred a FC degree on our newest craftsman Bro. Cesar who was spectacular during the examination of his knowledge in the former degree. The seventy or so Masons enjoyed the work of the evening and then came down to the banquet hall after the meeting where they enjoyed a fine dining experience prepared by our J.W. Bro. Lund. On Sunday March 26 five brethren from West Gate travelled to St. Catherines to attend the eighth annual Dr. Sankey Lecture at Brock University. Dr. Sankey was the second Chancellor of the University and served in that capacity for five years. He was a renowned Masonic scholar and a member of various Masonic bodies. He donated his extensive Masonic library and research papers collection to the University and they can be found in the "James Gibson Library" at Brock and can be viewed by anyone during their hours of operation. You can also contact Brock University and let then know you are a Mason and they will give you access to reference material not available to the general public. The lecture series this time was about the "Badge of the Freemason" and Dr. Aimee Newell the executive director of the Luzerne County Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Dr. Newell talked about he origins of the Masonic apron and how it started with the decorations on the aprons being hand drawn and later embroidered. These early Masonic aprons which date back to 1760 are reminders of just how robust our fraternity is and how our current regalia had not changed a great deal since the seventeenth century. Even thought the aprons she discussed were mostly American, the similarities are noticeable and goes to show that the Masonry of old is still the Masonry we love and enjoy today. Brethren, as you may be aware, R.W. Bro. Charles A. Reid passed to the Grand Lodge Above on Sunday. R.W. Brother Reid was a stalwart in Masonry, and a long-time member of Grand Lodge (Board of General Purposes). He was involved in Masonry in so many other ways; too many to list in a simple email.
Right Worshipful Brother Reid was also a great friend to West gate Lodge and his attendance in the lodge will surely be missed. The details of his remembrance ceremonies are as follows: Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 22 from 2 - 4 PM and 6 - 9 PM with a Masonic Service at 8 PM at Ward Funeral Home "Weston Chapel" 2035 Weston Road, Toronto, M9N 1X7 Visitation Thursday, March 23 from 10 am until service begins at 11 am. Funeral Service on Thursday, March 23 at St. Philip's Anglican Church 31 St. Philip's Road, Etobicoke, M9P 2N7 Our Official Visit will therefore be POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29TH at 7:00 p.m. in order to afford us the opportunity to pay our respects to R.W. Brother Reid. I encourage you to join me this Wednesday night to pay your respects. |
