The Memorial Tower is capped with an Egyptian pyramid and surmounted with a stylized flame-like finial as a reference to ancient lighthouses. Freemasonry was a guiding light to Washington as he was the guiding light of the American Revolution and the formation of the United States. The Memorial is a Lighthouse, spreading the light and knowledge of Freemasonry to the world.
The memorial has its own newsletter that can be downloaded here.
While at the memorial I purchased a copy of "The Way of the Craftsman" by W. Kirk MacNulty. A worthwhile book for the mason's library. Macnulty interprets Masonic symbols in terms of psychology. Everything from the structure of the Temple, to the officers of the Lodge has an important meaning. The author goes through the important symbols of each degree, illustrating how our rituals form the basis of a psychological process of self-discovery. Self-discovery is a lifetime labor and to obtain this knowledge, one must endeavor to apply the principles of the Craft on a daily basis. By applying the approach advocated by Macnulty, the Masonic journey can be enriched towards a greater Masonic enlightenment.
